What happens at the appointment?
During an external ultrasound, the area is uncovered, gel is applied and a probe is moved over the skin. The doctor assesses the images and takes measurements. Ultrasound uses no ionising radiation.
How to prepare
For abdominal ultrasound, you usually need to fast for 6–8 hours unless your doctor advises otherwise; water is allowed. A full bladder may be required for bladder assessment.
