How does ultrasound work?

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of organs and soft tissues. It helps assess tissue structure and changes without ionising radiation. Doppler ultrasound additionally assesses blood flow in vessels.

What happens during the examination?

For an external ultrasound, the patient uncovers the area and takes the position requested by the doctor. Gel is applied to the skin, and an ultrasound probe is moved over the area. The doctor assesses images and takes measurements, asking you to change position or briefly hold your breath if needed.

How to prepare for the examination

Breast, thyroid and soft tissue ultrasound, and Doppler examinations of arm, leg and neck blood vessels usually require no special preparation.
For an abdominal ultrasound, arrive fasting, having eaten nothing for 6–8 hours unless your doctor advises otherwise. Water is allowed. If your medication must be taken with food, agree preparation with your doctor beforehand.
For kidney and urinary tract examinations that include the bladder, a full bladder is required. Follow the booking instructions about how much water to drink and when; do not empty your bladder before the examination.
For a prostate ultrasound, preparation depends on the examination method. Ask for precise instructions when booking.

Ultrasound examination types in Jelgava

Abdominal ultrasound assesses the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen and kidneys. It helps assess organ size and structure and identify changes such as gallstones or kidney stones.

Breast ultrasound assesses tissue structure and growths. It helps determine whether a palpable lump is fluid-filled, such as a cyst, or solid. Ultrasound may complement other breast examinations but does not replace mammography recommended by a doctor.

Doppler ultrasound assesses blood flow in arm and leg arteries or veins. Depending on the examination, it helps identify narrowing, blockages or clots and assess venous function. When booking, specify the area and whether arteries or veins need examination.

Doppler ultrasound of head and neck vessels assesses blood flow in vessels supplying the brain. It helps identify narrowing and circulatory changes. The doctor determines the scope according to symptoms and health.

Prostate ultrasound assesses the gland’s size and structure. It helps identify enlargement and other changes, for example when investigating urinary difficulties. Confirm the method and preparation when booking.
