Prevention is not about having the longest possible list of tests. The most valuable check is one chosen for your age, symptoms, family history and lifestyle. Even when you feel well, some health risks may cause no noticeable symptoms for a long time.
Why is feeling well not enough?
High cholesterol, impaired glucose metabolism and some heart, kidney or liver conditions may initially go unnoticed. At the same time, random tests without a clear purpose can produce misleading abnormalities and unnecessary worry. A preventive appointment therefore starts with a conversation: previous illnesses, medication, blood pressure, weight, physical activity, smoking, sleep and family medical history. NVD: preventive GP health check.
What does the doctor usually assess?
The doctor assesses overall cardiovascular risk, asks about diabetes and cancer in the family, and reviews vaccinations and age-appropriate screening. Depending on the situation, a full blood count, glucose or HbA1c, lipid profile, and kidney and liver function tests may be appropriate. One universal test package is not suitable for everyone. Tests should be selected so their results inform the next steps. NVD: preventive GP health check.
Prevention at different stages of life
At a younger age, lifestyle, reproductive and mental health, vaccination and family risks are particularly important. In middle age, monitoring blood pressure, lipids and glucose and attending national cancer screening become more important. Older adults also need assessment of falls risk, vision, hearing, medication interactions and functional ability. Frequency is determined by the doctor, not the calendar alone. NVD: preventive health checks for adults.
How to prepare for your appointment
Write down your medication and supplements, previous diagnoses, operations and significant family conditions. If you measure blood pressure or glucose at home, bring your records. Prepare your three most important questions. Accurate information helps the doctor avoid both insufficient and excessive testing.
