Why is an occupational health examination necessary?

An occupational health examination helps assess whether an employee’s health is compatible with a particular job and whether workplace factors have adversely affected health. Its scope is based on the workplace risk assessment, rather than a single test list for all employees.

Who needs an occupational health examination?

It is required for employees who are or will be exposed to harmful workplace factors, or work in special conditions. The employer identifies the risks and prepares an examination form describing the work.

When is the examination performed?

• An initial examination is performed before starting a job that requires an occupational health examination.
• A periodic examination is repeated according to workplace risks and the specified interval.
• An extraordinary examination is performed in specified situations, such as changed working conditions or justified concerns about workplace effects on health.

The frequency and required consultations or tests may differ between employees.

How to prepare for your appointment

Bring identification and the employer-completed examination form. When booking, confirm investigations, test preparation and additional documents. If you have previous results or medical summaries, ask whether to bring them.

What do you receive afterwards?

An occupational physician reviews the results and records an opinion on fitness for the work in the examination form. Recommendations or further examinations may be added where needed. This examination does not replace an individual consultation about new or persistent health concerns.
